Having completed the reading now of a total of four novels written maintxins Antonio Tabucchi I have discovered an interest in visiting Portugal, especially the city of Lisbon. Apparently, this is a well-loved classic that many people have read and loved over the years. This slim novel is set in the summer ofin fascist Portugal. The narrator is not wntonio this story otherwise she or he would know what exactly what is going on with Pereira.
By the time most readers have completed its 25 brief chapters they may well feel that they know the place Lisbon and the time July and August, in which it’s set as if they’d experienced them first-hand. So the “Pereira declares” tags ultimately struck me as existentialist, especially combined with signing his surname to the article at the end — Pereira, in the present tense, assumes leadership of his confederation of souls when he does what he knows is right.
Part of Tabucchi’s art is, of tabucchj, the open-ended ambiguities he likes to antonil his readers with. Unfortunately, I remained in and out of sync with him with baffled alacrity.
Set in Lisbon inwhen fascism was running riot across Europe, a lonely, obese middle-aged man follows his heart.
